Biphasic Mesothelioma

Biphasic mesothelioma is when there will be both epithelioid and sarcomatoid cells present. The prognosis that is facing the patient is going to depend on the ratio of oth of these cells and how much of each is in the tumor.

Biphasic tumors will have both epithelioid and sarcomatoid cells. Those that have more of the epithelioid cell ratio are going to grow at a faster rate but they are not going to spread any faster. When there are more sarcomatoid cells present, that leads to the tumor spreading through the body faster.

Characteristics

Cell Prevalence – Biphasic mesothelioma is the diagnosis that has the second highest prevalence. In fact, it has been found to contribute to roughly 30% of all cases.

Cell Description – Since this type is made up of both epithelioid and sarcomatoid cell type, the prognosis is dependent upon which type of cell is more prevalent.

Cell Behavior – Similar to the cell description, it depends on which cell type exists more.

Diagnosis

A biphasic diagnosis is more common when it comes to patients that are suffering from pleural mesothelioma. These cells can also be found within patients that are suffering from different cancers such as colon, renal and even breast cancer. Some of the most common that you will see with this type of mesothelioma are pain in the chest, fluid building up and even a hard time breathing.

Doctors use immunohistochemistry to determine if you have biphasic mesothelioma. This is when a dye is used so that the cells are easier to see and can be determined if cancer proteins are in your body. It is always important to see a specialist to help you determine which type of treatment is going to be the best for you. You need to know which type of cells are more prevalent to identify which treatment you need to consider.

Treatment

Those dealing with this type of mesothelioma will receive treatment such as radiation, chemotherapy, and also curative surgeries. There are some new treatments that are showing success such as gene and photodynamic therapy as well as intensity modulated radiation therapy. Because of this, it is always important for patients to receive an accurate diagnosis to ensure that they are getting the very best treatment.

It is always very important to ensure that the patient is receiving the correct diagnosis. This will help to ensure that the patient is always getting the very best treatment and treatment that is accurate with their diagnosis. This can also open the lines related to different types of clinical trials as well.

Extrapleural pneumonectomies will not generally be given to patients with biphasic mesothelioma as most doctors think that only those patients with the epithelioid subtypes should be able to receive EPP.

Prognosis

When a patient has been diagnosed with biphasic mesothelioma, and it consists primarily of epithelioid cells, they are thought to have a much better outcome. Even though there are a number of new treatments being developed all of the time, there is no cure yet. If a patient has biphasic mesothelioma with more sarcomatoid cells they have an outcome and prognosis that is poorer.

Keep in mind that there are a number of cases in which those with epithelioid biphasic mesothelioma patients live longer than the regular average. These patients were living a very healthy lifestyle before they found out about their diagnosis, and it was caught in stage 1.
